Sustainability built into the model
Ballers Market wasn't built to be sustainable as an afterthought. Sustainability is the entire foundation of how we operate.
We don't produce anything new. We don't encourage over-consumption. We don't hide behind vague "eco-friendly" claims.
Instead, we've built a system where every item stays in use as long as possible, every purchase funds social impact and every piece that doesn't sell locally finds a home internationally.
Here's how we do it.
Circular by design
Every item on Ballers Market has already been produced, worn and loved. By giving it a second life, we avoid the environmental cost of new production:
- No new water use – textile production is one of the most water-intensive industries.
- No new dyes – synthetic and chemical dyes pollute waterways and ecosystems.
- No new packaging waste – we use minimal, recyclable packaging to ship items that already exist.
- No new labor exploitation – pre-loved fashion skips the often-exploitative supply chains of fast fashion.
Circularity isn't a trend for us. It's the foundation of how we operate. We don't sell sustainability. We practice it by default.
Why we work with ReShare
The Salvation Army ReShare has been collecting, reusing and redistributing clothing for over 100 years. They're not a trend-chasing startup. They're a proven system that works.
By channeling our under-€90 selection into their Rotterdam store, we:
- Keep accessible fashion local, physical and affordable
- Support their broader work in clothing distribution, crisis response and community services
- Ensure that items which don't sell in Rotterdam are redirected through ReShare's international channels across Europe, reaching people who need quality clothing wherever they are
Zero landfill, always
Items that don't meet our standards for the Dutch market aren't discarded. They're redirected internationally through ReShare's network. Nothing ends up in the trash. Every piece has a destination.
This partnership is what makes our model fully circular. Not just in theory, but in practice.
Materials & circularity
Most items on Ballers Market are premium materials: high-quality cotton, wool, leather, technical fabrics and designer synthetics built to last.
These materials don't break down after a season. They're designed for longevity—which is exactly why they're perfect for resale and circular fashion.
Why quality matters in circularity:
- High-quality items can be worn, resold and worn again multiple times before reaching the end of their life.
- Premium construction means fewer repairs, less maintenance and longer wearability.
- Timeless styles (not fast fashion trends) stay relevant across seasons and personal style changes.
When items do reach the end:
If an item truly can't be resold or worn anymore, it's redirected through ReShare's international channels where it may still have value in different markets or be responsibly recycled through their network.
We don't just extend the life of clothin. We maximize it.
Packaging & logistics
We use minimal, recyclable packaging to protect your items during shipping:
- Recycled cardboard boxes or poly mailers (recyclable where facilities exist)
- No excess padding or branded packaging waste
- Reused packaging materials when possible
Why we don't over-optimize shipping:
Some platforms obsess over carbon-neutral shipping while ignoring the bigger picture. We focus on the fundamentals: keeping clothing in use longer, reducing returns through transparency and consolidating shipments where possible.
Shipping inherently has a footprint, but the environmental cost of one shipment is far lower than producing a new garment from scratch.
Long-term goals
We're constantly working to improve our impact. Future priorities include:
Expand circular partnerships
Working with more organizations like ReShare to create additional pathways for clothing redistribution and responsible recycling.
Launch take-back and repair programs
Building systems where items we've sold can come back for repair, resale or responsible end-of-life handling.
Reduce packaging further
Testing compostable mailers, fully reusable packaging and local pick-up options to eliminate shipping waste.
Build transparent impact dashboards
Real-time data showing how many items we've kept in circulation, where they've gone and how much waste we've prevented.
Scale the model beyond football
Proving that this system works in football culture so it can be adapted to other sports, industries and communities.
This is a long game. We're building a system that lasts, not chasing short-term sustainability PR.
